FMP : Discover

For my FMP I decided to make a documentary style film on France and the colonisation of Francophone West African countries which relates back to Democracy, Empowerment and Protest. During the Discover phase, I did a lot of research on the topic and created a storyboard to decide what I wanted to feature in my film, and a moodboard to decide on the visual aesthetics of the film.

For my primary research I visited different locations, went on walks observing the environment and listened to songs to spark ideas in my head on how I wanted to structure my film. This proved to be very helpful as I am someone who comes up with many ideas when reflecting this way.

For my secondary research, I decided to explore the internet looking for videos, websites, etc which could help me for my project. However, recognising the importance of multiple research sources, I didn't limit myself to online sources alone. I also reached out to my family members, seeking their guidance and expertise to broaden my understanding. Together, these combined efforts created a comprehensive approach, ensuring that I gathered a diverse range of knowledge to enhance my project. I watched tiktok videos about the story of Operation Persil in Guinea as it was something that I wasn't quite educated on, and it was a topic that I wanted to include in my film. I feel these videos helped me a lot as I was able to convey the topic in my short film in a proper way.

Recognising the significance of incorporating the pre-colonial history of the affected nations, I dedicated considerable time to researching their historical backgrounds using sites like Britannica, Wikipedia etc. I felt that was a major key for my film so that we could see the before and after of West Africa.

Some research sources I used for my project:

https://www.britannica.com/topic/history-of-Mali

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zs4ptrd#zwy7jsg

https://www.britannica.com/place/French-West-Africa

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_French

In summary, my research proved to be helpful as it served as a foundation and was vital to ensuring I wasn't spreading misinformation and fact-checking correctly, thus playing a pivotal role in bringing my project to fruition and maintaining its credibility and integrity throughout the process.
